Summary

This study examined aspects of violence against minors in the service area of the Institute of Forensic Medicine Freiburg from 2003 to 2019. The data analysis included 615 forensic examinations of living minors and showed a significant increase in case numbers over the study period. The majority of examinations was conducted due to suspicion of physical or sexual abuse. The results emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and a comprehensive medical history, as many cases of child abuse do not show morphological findings. A distinction must be made between the diagnosis of abuse, which allows for a retrospective evaluation, and the prognosis of a child welfare risk, which indicates a future threat to the child. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for preventive and supportive measures in child protection to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable children.
